As an August 1, 2005 article in USA Today indicated, marijuana use is cropping up on some critically acclaimed television shows, raising questions about its glamorization and about it being irresponsible in light of decade’s old efforts to orient young people to lead drug-free lives.
I have been part of those efforts since the Reagan Administration asked me in the late 1980s to help shape a nationwide project to involve and educate parents as the key soldiers in the War Against Drugs.
I helped to create the Parent Training Is Prevention Project that resulted in state substance abuse prevention agencies promoting parent training as a prevention approach. One legacy of those efforts is the current Parents: The Anti-Drug project with its very helpful website and newsletter for parents, and its anti-drug media campaign urging parents to play a variety of prevention roles.
At the core of all of these messages is the need for parents to model drug-free lifestyles and to maintain warm and mutually satisfying relationships with children
